On December 13, 2017 we honored some of our island’s best athletes by providing the team with new, deserved, and hard earned letterman jackets free of charge! We are so very proud of our Galveston Independent School District Special Olympians, and it was an honor to be invited to their banquet at Moody Gardens.
As of 9/1/2017, TEA has authorized Special Olympics athletes to be eligible for letterman jackets just like their grade level peers. With the grant awarded this team in 2014, the Tornados have achieved over 45 medals at each of the past two track and field games in May of 2016 and May of 2017. Because of the generous donations to get the team established, it has allowed the athletes to represent Galveston ISD and the Galveston Community in Track and Field, Basketball, and bowling. The two basketball teams each brought home silver medals from the March 2017 Area 22 Basketball Competition. We also had two individual skills athletes and that brought home and gold and silver medals in their divisions. This year, ten (10) athletes qualified under the new TEA rule for Letterman jackets.
